Videos of the Tongass
Steelhead are “officially” found in over 300 streams in the Tongass National Forest, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's official Anadromous Waters Catalog. But we believe the real number is probably twice that, meaning hundreds of streams don't receive the conservation measures they deserve.
Learn more about what Trout Unlimited is doing to help conserve those populations by watching our latest film Anadromous Waters. |

Trout Unlimited partnered this summer with Sitka Conservation Society, the U.S. Forest Service and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to restore a key salmon-producing river in the Tongass National Forest. The Sitkoh River watershed provides critical spawning and rearing habitat for salmon, steelhead and other species but 1970s-era logging created problems for the river’s fish populations. With a $318,000 budget, the partners hired Aqua Terra Restoration to repair the damage and restore the river to its natural condition. Sitka Conservation Society intern Bethany Goodrich produced a 6-minute video about the project.

Steelhead are the illusive unicorn of Southeast Alaska. One of our go-to target species, and hands down one of the hardest to catch; from bad weather, to snags in the river. Check out this video by Alaska Fly Fishing Goods.
"This spring, Gavin Blood hit one of our favorite Southeast Alaska steelhead watersheds. In typical steelheading form, the group experienced all sorts of weather, low water conditions, cold nights, and some sticky fishing conditions. That's alright though... Steelheading wouldn't be the same without a few snags, right?!" Video by Alaska Fly Fishing Goods. |

Let’s talk about salmon–Pacific salmon that is–and to be specific about our Pacific salmon, let’s talk about Southeast Alaska, the region in green on the map. Southeast Alaska is mostly the Tongass National Forest, although some of it is also the Glacier Bay Nation Park, and the most important thing about the Tongass is that it produces A LOT of salmon.

Once October hits, Alaskans begin the decent into short days, dark nights, snow, rain, and frozen watersheds. For some of us, this means traveling to a warm weather destination and drying out for a few days (or weeks). For others, it means long weekends with mornings spend walking around in the woods with a rifle, chasing deer, bear, and other critters before hibernation, and afternoons spent casting flies to hungry trout.
This year, we are happy to say that a few staff members at Alaska Fly Fishing Goods got to do all of the above. Follow us on the end of season adventure we had in the Tongass National Forest the last week of October chasing Sitka Black-tailed deer, and Coastal Cutthroat Trout. Since the trip, we have packed up our rods, rinsed our reels, and begun planning our next, hopefully warm water, adventure! Video by Alaska Fly Fishing Goods. |

"The 9.3 million acres of Tongass National Forest inventoried roadless areas comprises habitat for a unique diversity of sought-after game species, including mountain goats, black-tailed deer and both brown and black bears. The Tongass also encompasses thousands of miles of salmon-rich waterways, legendary among anglers and fundamental to the state’s commercial salmon industry. These valuable resources are upheld by the Roadless Rule, a collaborative management approach that was adopted following one of the most extensive public engagement campaigns in the history of federal rulemaking."
